Safari Overview

This 1 Day Rhino Tracking Tour Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Uganda is a short safari trip to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, tailored for you to experience an encounter with the endangered white rhinos. It’s shocking to think that rhinos in Uganda became extinct as a result of almost ceaseless poaching. Fortunately, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary presents to the rhinos a second chance at life—what the sight of each new dawn presents to us. The sanctuary rests on 70 square kilometers of land in Nakasongola District, 176 km from the capital, Kampala, on the Gulu highway toward Murchison Falls National Park.

Uganda was originally home to the black rhino, with the last one recorded in 1982. The sanctuary’s establishment in 2002 paved the way for a restoration process that saw the introduction of the southern white rhinos donated by the European Union, Disney World, and Kenya in 2005. Today, there are 33 rhinos so far, up from the six that were donated.

Detailed Itinerary

Your 1 Day Rhino Tracking Tour Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Uganda begins and ends in Kampala or Entebbe. It allows you to sight not only rhinos but also several other mammal species and birdlife.

We begin the trip at 7 a.m. after breakfast, driving through Luweero, our usual stopover point, where you will purchase fresh fruits for the day before reaching Nakasongola. Nakasongola is a section of the country’s cattle corridor, and you will see cattle grazing short grasses in the open deciduous savanna woodland. The ride to the sanctuary normally takes about 2.5–3 hours.

It’s only in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary that travelers are rewarded with excellent rhino tracking experiences in Uganda. This excursion starts with a briefing session at the entrance of the sanctuary, where a number of guidelines are issued, among which is the need to walk in a single file or line. By logic, walking alone or in isolation from the course or line renders you an easy target for the rhinos in the event of an attack. It is important to heed the ranger’s instructions while on this trek to avoid any regrets.

You may choose to drive to the closest route to the rhinos, depending on where they are, in order to avoid having to walk far. Your ranger guide will further share more facts about the rhinos, including their behavior and how you ought to respond in case of an attack.

Apart from rhinos, expect to sight animals like waterbucks, bushbucks, Uganda kobs, elusive leopards (rarely seen during the day though), duikers, different bird species, and many more.

Tracking usually takes 2 hours, and thereafter, you will have lunch at Kabalega Dinners before making a return trip to Kampala or Entebbe.
