Know Before You Go

You’ll be hiking moderately steep slopes searching for the mountain giants at high altitudes between 2400 and 4507 meters, which means fitness is required. There are strict guidelines for visiting these places and meeting the gorillas, and you’ll be escorted by a tracker, rangers, and a guide with a group of other seven trekking travelers.
Please note that wildlife viewing, quantity, and species of animals seen are dependent upon local conditions, including weather, wind, and seasonal migration patterns.

Day 1: Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Tour.

Your driver guide will pick you up from your lodge after breakfast or with a packed breakfast to start your 2–3-hour road trip to Volcanoes National Park. You will ride through a beautiful mountainous countryside, which definitely confirms to you why Rwanda is referred to as “the land of a thousand hills”.

On arrival at the park headquarters, you will be briefed (for 45 minutes) by park officers and then assigned to a gorilla group. Two-armed ranger guides will then lead you into the forest jungle to search for the primates. A packed lunch, comfortable clothes, shoes, and a walking stick when venturing into this gigantic forest will keep you on course.

The time spent gorilla trekking is unpredictable. It varies from 2 to 8 hours before an encounter with a family of these gentle creatures. Each gorilla family’s location is determined by its feeding range, the weather, and its movements the day before. Trackers will go before your tracking group to find the apes. Strict guidelines will be issued at the briefing point. So make sure you remember the most important ones.

After enjoying the one hour allotted to you (the only time allowed in the company of each gorilla family per day) with these elusive apes, you will descend the forest and return to Kigali in the late afternoon to make it in time for your flight.
