Safari Overview

Explore Lake Mburo National Park on a perfect 3 Days wildlife and boat cruise safari and enjoy game drives, horseback riding, cycling, nature walks, quad biking, birding, and fishing.

Within about a 4-hour drive from Kampala lies Lake Mburo National Park. It is one of Uganda’s smaller savanna parks and is popular for being the only home of impalas, and many more wildlife roams within its boundaries.

This Perfect 3 Days Lake Mburo Safari – Wildlife & Boat Cruise is particularly suitable for family and friends who want to spend a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city or travelers who want a short drive away for a picnic surrounded by wildlife.

The Perfect 3 Days Lake Mburo Safari – Wildlife & Boat Cruise allows you to spot an abundance of plains game like elands, plain zebras, lots of bushbucks, Defassas, hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, topis, reedbucks, sitatunga, common duikers, vervet monkeys, side-striped jackals, warthogs, and smaller mammals like dwarf mongooses, white-tailed mongoose, otters, and marsh mongooses, and a prolific birdlife.

Although lions can be found again after years of absence, it is quite challenging to have a glimpse on them during game drives. Other predators here are the elusive leopards which can be seen during night game drives and spotted hyenas.

You will enjoy boat cruises, cycling, birding, game drives, horseback riding, nature walks, quad biking, and fishing. This park is one of the best places to go sport fishing in Uganda. So you can go fish one of the 6 species found in the lake, such as tilapia and lungfish among others.

Lake Mburo is also a popular birder’s paradise, with about 313 bird species recorded. That means the bird-watching opportunities here are impressive. You will take a boat trip on the lake to view lots of birds in the papyrus swamps, like the mysterious shoebill stork. The African finfoot can be seen at the shores of Lake Mburo, including the White-winged Warbler, the Crested Francolin, and many more.

You will stop over at the equator to take amazing photos and witness the water experiment, take a lunch break in Mbarara town and then make another stop at Mpambire royal drum makers to see how local drums are made out of wood and animal hides.

Check-in at your lodge upon arrival and refresh as you prepare for a late afternoon game drive along the Kigambira Loop trail. You will see a variety of resident wildlife, like zebras, elands, buffaloes, giraffes, bush babies, antelopes, and many more.

The ride takes about 5.5 hours.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Wake up to a sumptuous breakfast and embark on an early morning game drive along the Kazuma track. The Kazuma track offers breath-taking views of the park’s rolling hills and all five lakes.

You will explore the deeper sections of the park to sight impalas, zebras, eland, bush bucks, water bucks, warthogs, klipspringers, and many other mammals. You also have the opportunity to sight nocturnal animals and predators like leopards, hyenas, and jackals on this morning game drive.

After completing the morning game drive, you will return to the lodge for lunch, refreshment, and relaxation and then embark on a boat ride along the shores of Lake Mburo.

You will sight a variety of animals at the waterfront, like crocodiles, hippopotamus, and water birds such as African finfoot, African grey hornbill, fish eagles, pelicans, black crakes, herons, cormorants, white-winged warblers, yellow-breasted Apalis, and the rare shoebill stork, among others. After your day’s activities, you will return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and a great African night.

Lake Mburo is the only park that conducts horseback safaris, quad biking safaris, mountain biking, and walking safaris. After breakfast, you will choose to embark on one of these safaris.

The salt lick area presents one of the best places to go for a guided nature walk in Lake Mburo. This is where impalas, zebras, and other plains game go to lick salt. A camouflaged wooden platform has been set to allow visitors to freely observe animals at the salt lick.

You can choose to explore the park by quad bike, mountain bike, or horseback. The horseback safari allows you to get very close to the animals, as they are less agitated in the company of horses.

You can also choose to go sport fishing at the Mazinga landing site, though you’ll need to have your own fishing equipment and a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. All these activities are led by the park’s ranger guides, who know where to find the animals.

This marks the end of your Lake Mburo safari, and you start your road trip back to Kampala or Entebbe.
