Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

The long-awaited day is finally before you; your heart beats in the rhythm of the forest in anticipation of that special one-on-one encounter with the gentle giants. After a sumptuous breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters for a safety briefing that usually starts at 8:00 a.m.

After briefing, you will be led into the forest jungle by expert guides, navigating the dense foliage at the foot of the volcano in search of the majestic mountain gorillas. That final uninterrupted hour of your face-to-face encounter with the gentle giants is priceless and will leave you captivated. Later, you will return to your lodge for lunch and then relax.

In the afternoon, you may take a guided walk and visit the Garama cave, which is 342 meters long and 14 meters deep. It’s one of the caves where the indigenous Batwa people, a marginalized group, once occupied but are now inhabited by bats. After exploring the cave, you will relish the night in Mgahinga in the midst of a symphony of sounds and whispers.

Day 3: Hiking and Golden Monkey Tracking

Mount Gahinga sits on the border between Uganda and Rwanda. The three conical peaks, i.e., Gahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhavura, rise up to 4127 metres above sea level. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also one of the only two parks where travelers can track golden monkeys in their natural habitat.

After a safety briefing, you will start ascending the slopes of the volcano through bamboo forests in search of the golden monkeys. Golden monkeys are swift in their movements in contrast to the gorillas, so you will follow them as they feed on bamboo shoots, fruits, vegetation, and sometimes insects.

You will be allowed to spend only one hour to observe them before you start your descent back to the starting point of the trek. After this encounter, you will continue to your lodge and relax for the rest of the day.

Day 4: Departure

We hope you had an adventure-filled stay exploring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. After a leisurely breakfast, you may lazily pack up your bags and transfer to Kampala or Entebbe. You will be dropped off at your lodge or the airport to catch your flight back home.
