Know Before You Go
- The 9 Days Tanzania Safari is a single-destination safari with no crossing borders. Local flights are meant to ease transfers between destinations and to minimize your travel time and are less tiring than driving. However, we’ll still use 4×4 safari vehicles between shorter destinations.
- Note that agility is required to embark and disembark whatever vessel is necessary. Wildlife viewing, quantity, and species of animals seen are dependent upon local conditions, including weather, wind, and seasonal migration patterns. The take-off time, the duration of a flight (if required), or road transfers may vary due to weather conditions. Balloon rides vary but are usually 45 minutes to an hour.
9 Days Tanzania Safari Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will meet your safari guide and be transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge. This charming lodge is set on a picturesque coffee plantation and offers beautiful views of Mount Meru. It is the ideal place to acclimate to Africa upon arrival.
After settling into your cottage, you can simply relax in the poolside gardens with a chilled drink, take a stroll through the plantations, or visit the markets in nearby Arusha. On cool winter evenings, get cozy next to a fireplace and sip one of the best coffees you will ever taste.
Day 2-3: Transfer to Lake Manyara
After a leisurely breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport, where a charter plane awaits to wing you to Lake Manyara. Upon meeting you at the airstrip, your guide will transfer you to Lake Manyara National Park, whetting your appetite for the adventures to come. Before long, you will arrive at the grove of mahogany trees that cradles Lake Manyara Tree Lodge.
You will have an exclusive and intimate experience staying at the only lodge within the park, perfectly complemented by the lodge’s relaxed ambience. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge features ten delightful tree-house suites radiating from an elegant central lounge, bar, and dining area. You can open up the sliding doors of your thatched chalet and let the African sunlight and fresh air breathe life in as you get fascinated by the breath-taking views.
Settle in for two nights, enjoying morning and afternoon game drives as well as exciting night drives. A magnificent section of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara has a rich variety of natural habitats set around the soda lake. It is a haven for clouds of flamingos and other waterbirds – this is a paradise for avid birders!
The forested valleys and open savannah plains support a varied range of animal species, such as a large elephant population, giraffes, buffalo, and many antelope species. Fewer predators are popular here, but topping the list are Lake Manyara’s mysterious tree-climbing lions.
Day 4-5: Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Crater is a long-extinct volcano and the world’s largest intact caldera. It is ranked as one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations on Earth. A diversity of habitats, including permanent wetlands, which support astonishing numbers of animals, are sheltered within its steep-sided walls.
Ngorongoro is home to a thriving population of big game species such as great-tusked elephants, robust black rhinos, and the famous black-maned lions. With a density of game rarely seen anywhere else in Africa, combined with breath-taking scenery, this is one of the few places in Africa where the Big 5 can be seen in a single game drive.
Arriving at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge feels like you have arrived at the threshold of another world. Perched on the rim of the crater, the lodge offers what must be one of the most spectacular views in Africa and sometimes shrouded in a fine veil of mist.
Settle into your impressively designed suite, marveling at the panoramic landscape vista from your private terrace. Meet your safari guide over a decadent high tea, you can discuss your special interests and the game viewing experience at Ngorongoro.
After a full day of exploring and a delicious picnic lunch on the crater plains, you will return to the lodge’s elegant comforts with time to digest the wonders you have seen and share the tale with fellow travelers over fireside cocktails. A sumptuous dinner is served in the glamorous dining room, bringing the day to a delightful end.
Day 6-8: Transfer to Serengeti
A farewell beckons as you board your charter flight to the Serengeti. The aerial view reveals the legendary reserve below you as you observe the vast open plains stretching towards a distant horizon.
This is where the famed wildebeest migration occurs at certain times of the year, when over a million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle take on their yearly movement, following the seasonal rains to fresh grazing that nurtures their new-born calves and foals.
The herds are driven by instincts as ancient as the Serengeti itself, making them face hordes of magnificent predators on the open plains and brave strong currents and lurking crocodiles to cross the treacherous rivers.
Upon arrival in this legendary park, you will settle in the Serengeti Under Canvas, a mobile tented camp that follows the migration. It is traditionally elegant and as comfortable as any permanent lodge.
The Serengeti Under Canvas makes the most of its prime location on the Serengeti plains and delivers some of the best migration sightings in the region, as well as excellent year-round Big 5 sightings.
The three days at Serengeti Under Canvas present a variety of opportunities to witness why Tanzania is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. Morning and afternoon game drives will be led by expert guides and are the primary focus of your daily activities, while night drives, guided nature walks, and hot-air ballooning (optional extra) add new perspectives to your Serengeti experience.
Day 9: Homeward bound
Wake up to an early morning game drive and last delicious brunch in camp before embarking on the journey home. Fly over this ancient landscape while reflecting on the episodes of your spectacular encounters: the humbling courage of migrant herds crossing a crocodile-infested river, the thrill of witnessing a hunting lion pride, the dreamy serenity of hot-air ballooning, and the joyful antics of zebra foals at play.
All the sights and sounds of the Serengeti surely remain in your heart, transporting you back to the wide-open sky and endless savannah.
