Best Accommodations for an Authentic Wildebeest Migration Safari

The wildebeest migration, also referred to as the ‘greatest show on earth,’ is an age-old natural spectacle that sees about 2 million animals follow the rains on a death-defying, 3 000 km (1 900 mi) journey annually in search of grazing.

This epic natural display has drawn thousands of travelers from all over the world to witness the awe-inspiring sight of millions of wildebeest, together with their companions, zebras and gazelles, navigating their way across the endless plains of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is truly Mother Nature’s greatest spectacle on earth!

Witnessing one of the dramatic river crossings is unimaginably more than watching a live National Geographic film. Vast herds of grunting ungulates plunge from the banks into the water and thunder across the river while dodging the notoriously huge Nile crocodiles lurking in the apparently still waters.

Since nature sets the schedule, timing is important. It requires viewers to be in the right place at the right time. While planning a successful wildebeest migration safari, experience and extensive local knowledge are important. Stingers Africa Safaris will help you tailor-make a perfect trip to the Serengeti and Masai Mara to witness the Great Migration.

A great number of accommodation options are situated along the migration route, where it all takes place between June and September. To put you in the most convenient spot during the events, we’ve curated a list of 20 of our best places to stay, from luxurious lodges to mobile tented camps, each offering a unique vantage point to view the natural occurrence. Bear in mind that the best time to go on a migration safari depends on which event you are interested in seeing and experiencing.

When to See the Wildebeest Migration

It takes a full year for the migration to complete a single cycle, which means that you have at least an opportunity to see the vast herds throughout the year. However, because the animals cover huge distances, certain highlights only occur in particular months:
