Lake Baringo – Kenya Safari Guide
Lake Baringo is located at the most northern end of Kenya’s Rift Valley after Lake Turkana with a surface area of 130 square kilometres (50 sq mi) and an elevation of 970 metres (3,180 ft). While it is fed by several tributaries like the Perkerra, Molo, and Ol Arabel, there is no obvious outlet from the lake.
Lake Baringo is one of the two freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, the other being Lake Naivasha. Several small islands dot the lake, the largest being Ol Kokwe Island (the meeting place). Ol Kokwe is an extinct volcanic centre comprised of several hot springs, small bubbling pools, and steam jets (fumaroles) along the shoreline near the corner of the island.
Lake Baringo reflects the surrounding Mau and Tugen Hills, from which its chocolate-coloured water carrying plenty of topsoil flows. It is an important habitat and refuge for more than 500 bird and animal species, including migratory flamingos and other water bird species. The abundance of different bird species makes it a must-go spot for bird enthusiasts, who will enjoy boat rides while spotting beautiful birds.
Gibraltar, a rocky islet on the eastern shore of the lake, is renowned for having the largest population of Goliath herons in the East African region. The Great Rift Valley Escarpment and the mountains that are high above the Rift’s floor offer spectacular views of the lake.
The lake hosts seven freshwater fish species, one of which is Nile tilapia, a subspecies endemic to the lake. The area hosts a considerable number of animal species, including hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, and many other mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrate communities.
Morning and evening bird walks are usually carried out in the company of the resident ornithologists. Visitors are lavished with opportunities to spot several magnificent birds of prey, noisy and restless bush birds, and the numerous other species frequenting the shore. Small motorized boats are available for hire and are captained by knowledgeable bird enthusiasts.
The beautiful gardens of the Lake Baringo Club, as well as the swimming pool that is surrounded by clusters of exotic shrubs, are attractions that have guests frequenting here all day. You can take a visit to the club in the course of your excursions.
Activities here include bird watching, nature walks, and game viewing.
